On Saturday, December 27, 2018, a commemoration to the former High Representative in BiH, Paddy Ashdown, took place in the Sarajevo City Hall. A member of the Presidency of BiH Šefik Džaferović, former member of the BiH Presidency Mirko Pejanović, former Chairman of the Council of Ministers of BiH Adnan Terzić and the Deputy Mayor of Sarajevo Ivica Šarić addressed the audience, while the former member of the Presidency of BiH Haris Silajdžić was also present.
- During his mandate, key reforms that set this country on the tracks towards the European Union and the NATO alliance were made. BiH will be grateful to him forever, said Džaferović.
The commemoration was attended by a number of prominent figures from political, diplomatic and public life, including Ambassador of the Great Britain to BiH Matthews Field, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to BiH Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, Rector of the University of Sarajevo Rifat Škrijelj and others. Rector Mirsad Đonlagić, President Denis Prcić and Vice-President for International Cooperation Esmir Ganić attended the commemoration on behalf of the American University in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Mr. Terzic said that Ashdown gave the then government the opportunity to carry out some of the key reforms.
- Although most of the international community at the time thought that my government and the parties that comprised it would not do any good for BiH and they also forecasted bankruptcy of BiH, Paddy Ashdown said, "Let's give them a chance," Terzić remembered Lord Ashdown's words.
Ashdown was High Representative in BiH from May 2002 to January 2006, and many still remember him as decisive and just.
- He was a man of action, strict and just, determined when needed, focused on problems that needed to be resolved, he proved to be brave and also had the instinct of leader, said Mr. Šarić.
Mr. Pejanovic added that the BiH Armed Forces have established NATO standards, and that the stability of peace in BiH will receive new dimensions and guarantees when BiH becomes a NATO member.
